Green Village

Tenerife is the proud owner of the first bioclimatic village in the worlds. There have been built 25 energy self-sufficient houses. Each one of the constructions has a distinct design and uses different technologies. The houses will have a second purpose of being an experiment in sustainability. Except a place to put up tourists, the houses will be science laboratories. They will collect information about temperature, humidity and air movement and send it back to the creators. In this way they will be able to monitor the functioning of the project and consider the technologies’ efficiency. The project is the brain child of The Technological Institute for Renewable Energy at Granadilla. Its development took more than 15 years and cost approximately 10 million euro.

Green Initiatives

This project is part of the greater initiative of the government of Tenerife to turn the resort into a sustainable tourism destination. Other initiatives that are stressed are renewable energy sources, clean transport, and alternative fuels. Currently, around 50 percent of the island is protected natural areas. The majority of those are covered by forests.

Tenerife has good knowhow in solar and wind energy. It is mostly due to the good location of the island. It is calculated that there are more than 3500 sun hours per year and in some areas 10 hours of wind. The island is also exporting renewable energy expertise about biodiesel and solar power to rural areas in developing countries.

Many changes are planned in the public transportation system. Carbon emissions from cars are greatly slashed. High speed railways from the north to the south are under way. Cycle lanes and bike rentals are constructed near sights. The tramcar network is extended and hydro busses introduced.
